Josh Mackenzie studied Fine Art at East Sydney Technical College in the 1990’s, majoring in painting before completing his studies in philosophy at Macquarie University in 2000. Josh has been painting professionally since 2013 and alongside exhibiting nationally, has been shortlisted for many major Australian prizes.
Josh is best known for his psychedelic paintings (often of nudes) inspired by 60s and 70s pop culture. The artist embraces a technique reminiscent of Gerhard Richter, where wet oil paint is dragged across the surface of the canvas using a plasterer’s trowel. This gives his works a worn, hallucinogenic, filmic quality and evokes the Sublime.
